Kyoto City Zoo

This zoo was opened in 1903, making it the second oldest zoo in Japan after Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. Some 150 species are cared for at the zoo, including mammals, birds, insects and amphibians. The zoo also has amusements, like a Ferris wheel and mini electric train, to ensure that children and adults can enjoy an entire day out at the zoo. What is more, there is an animal library replete with animal books, an exhibition room displaying in stuffed/mounted form the animals that have been kept at the zoo over the years and other rare species. Also there is an animal handling corner to afford visitors the opportunity to touch and handle certain animals.

Heian-jingu Shrine

This was built in 1895 to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian-kyo (Kyoto). It deifies the first and last emperors to rule from Kyoto: Kammu and Komei. The extremely beautiful architecture, like the vermillion-painted Otenmon gate and Daigokuden hall, is a 5/8 scale replica of the ancient Heian-kyo council hall and offices. The shrine gardens, extending some 30,000 square meters, were created by the famous landscape gardener Jihei Ogawa VII. The gardens comprise east, west and central ones, all with ponds at their hearts. The south garden is noted for its cherry trees. On October 22nd each year, the Jidai Matsuri (one of the three big festivals in Kyoto) finishes at this shrine.
