Rokkaku-do is an urban Buddhist temple located just south of Karasuma-Oike Station in the center of Kyoto. Rokkaku-do is famous as the birthplace of ikebana flower arrangement in Japan, ikebana being one of the arts and crafts of Kyoto.
According to the
traditional regulations of
the Gion Festival, this
float leads the procession
of thirty-two floats every
year, in spite of the fact that the order of
march for the other floats is determined
by lots drawn officially by the Mayor of
Kyoto in advance.
This old temple has been worshipped as the deity for getting rid of cancer since the Heian period (794-1185).

This float derives its name
from an old saying in
China that a praying
mantis, though small, is
courageous e nough t o
raise its‘ hatchets’ high in the air and
stand in front of a marching army to try
to stop it.
