  • Japanese Food
Some 30 years have passed since this locally popular restaurant opened its doors to diners, with reasonably priced dishes cored around udon noodles and obanzai (Kyoto home cooking) dishes - notably the "ishokenmen" udon noodles - which bring diners rushing in their numbers at lunchtime. Yet, at night, the restaurant takes on a bar atmosphere with simpler dishes being served from large bowls on the counter. And, now overseas visitors to Japan have begun hearing about the casual but delights to be had at Manzo Heart, which nightly brings a cosmopolitan feel to the tables. And, after enjoying some drinks and tasty delights, why not cap the evening with a delicious bowl of udon noodles. The restaurant also has a course menu and a full line up of sake and shochu liquors.

[Message from the restaurant]
To make sure our diners are assured good, safe food, we pick the finest ingredients from our contracted farms and providers, making sure our seasonal vegetables are locally grown and organic, to ensure the quality and flavor of our dishes. Our famed udon noodles "ishokenmen" really are a delight you should try! Full bodied and delicious to the bite, they really are a treat. And, the restaurant manager in his rustic manner strives to interact with diners, using his English and our English menu to make overseas guests at home. Moreover, wheelchair users are assisted as best as possible to make their dining a care-free and enjoyable outing. (Part-time staff) (Month checked: 2014.Nov, )

Recommended dishes Way out at the top of the most popular dishes at this restaurant has to be the lunchtime "kujo-negi-udon" (thick noodles with leek topping) that incorporates the "ishokenmen" noodles (980 yen). The kujo-negi leeks (a Kyoto vegetable) and the bonito stock that go to make the noodle soup marry in perfect harmony to give this dish a sublime flavor. Among the other favorite dishes to be enjoyed at the restaurant, there is the "Kyo-mizuna-to-oage-no-harihari-udon-setto" (udon noodles topped with potherb mustard and deep-fried tofu) served with a side dish of pickles (1280 yen) and the "Obanzai setto" (cored around small seasonal dishes in the Kyoto home cooking style) served with a small bowl of udon noodles (1480 yen). And, if you dine here at night, the best thing to do is go along with the recommendation of the day, which will usually comprise ingredients that are in season in Kyoto on that day.
