Built in 1895 across the road from Sanjusangendo Temple, the museum comprises the Special Exhibition Hall (important cultural asset) designed by the famous architect Tokuma Katayama and the Collections Hall designed by Keichi Morita. Visitors are greeted by views of lawns, stone memorials, sculptures (Rodin's The Thinker, etc.) and fountain plaza as they enter the grounds. Inside, the museum houses antiquities that speak of Kyoto, Buddhist sculptures and religious artifacts from temples and shrines, sliding-door paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles and many other precious artworks, many of which are national treasures or important cultural assets. The museum also is prominent in Japan for its collections of Oriental (mainly Japanese) ancient artifacts and ancient artworks.
Note that at present the Collections Hall is undergoing building work so only the Special Exhibition Hall is open.
Exhibition routes are wide and slopes are in place, so wheelchair users can access the museum to enjoy exhibits. (Month checked: 2018.Dec, )
