Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art

Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art

Right beside the giant torii gate of Heian-jingu Shrine stands a brick building topped by an emerald green copper roof – this is the Municipal Museum of Art. Having been built in 1933, it is the second oldest art museum in Japan after the one in the capital, Tokyo. The collection includes superb works by contemporary Japanese artists who were active in Kyoto, such as Shoen Uemura, Chikyo Ono and Heihachiro Fukuda. The museum also holds exhibitions of works by the general public and aims to be an easy-to-access museum for everyone, so why not make a visit to see what is within the stately walls.
Efforts, such as exhibits for touch-and-feel experiences, are made to make the art enjoyable for the visually impaired. (Month checked: 2011.Jul, )
