Some 400 years ago, Ryoui Suminokura cleared a route along the Hozo-gawa River between Tamba (north of Kyoto) and Kyoto to bring produce into Kyoto by boat. With the start being Kameoka and the goal Saga Arashiyama, pleasure boats come down the 16-km Hozu-kyo (part of the Katsura-gawa River) route in about two hours. The boatmen using just poles, oars and rudder to skillfully steer boats down the narrow and rapid running river, slipping between boulders and rocks to offer the maximum thrill to tourist passengers. Along the way, passengers can enjoy seasonal sights – cherry blossoms in spring, the fresh verdure and rock-clinging azaleas of late spring/early summer, and the blanket of red hues that covers riverbanks and water as Japanese maples glow in autumn.
Guide dogs may accompany passengers, so even the visually impaired can enjoy this trip.
