Advice for Changing Trains at Kyoto Station

JR Kyoto Station is a hub station where you can board JR Tokaido Shinkansen trains, conventional JR trains, the Karasuma Subway trains, Kintetsu trains as well as City Buses and taxis. [Kyoto Station Map]
The station complex has a department store, hotel, theatre and many other amenities, which can be somewhat bewildering for first-time visitors in wheelchairs.
So, here is an introduction on how to use elevators to move smoothly between the various stations (ticket barriers and exits) in the complex.

From JR Shinkansen

  • If you leave the Shinkansen station from the central exit, the Kintetsu station will directly in front of you, buses and taxis to the right (Elevator two elevator rides required). [Shinkansen central exit map]
  • To move to the subway, leave the Shinkansen station via Hachijo exit, and go left (Elevator two elevator changes required). [Shinkansen Hachijo exit map]

From Conventional JR Lines

  • Exit from the JR central exit. In front to the left is the City Bus terminal, to the right is the Subway station (Elevator one elevator ride) and in front to the right is the taxi pool. [JR central exit map]
  • If you want to change to a Kintetsu train, it is best to leave JR via the west exit (Elevator one elevator change required). [JR west exit map]

From Subway

  • Exit from the subway central exit. Go left for JR central entrance, buses and taxis (Elevator one elevator change required), go right for JR Shinkansen (Elevator one elevator change required) and Kintetsu (Elevator two elevator changes required). [Subway central 1 ticket barrier map]

From Kintetsu
