Maruyama park

Set at the foot of the Higashiyama range, this park has an east-west incline. In the center of the park stands the famous cherry blossom tree, which is the second one to stand here, being planted as a seed of the original tree back in 1949. Through the center of the park there are steps and a stone bridge that make wheelchair access difficult, so wheelchair users should detour around these (beware that in so doing traffic carrying roads must be used).

Yasaka-jinja Shrine

Originally known as Gionsha Shrine or Kanshinin Shrine, the Yasaka name was only applied in the 19th century. It was built in the 7th century and is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a widely believed in deity that wards off evil. The current main hall and Nishiromon gate are both important cultural assets. The Yasaka-jinja Shrine's Gion Matsuri is one of the three major festivals in Kyoto, culminating in a procession July 17 of stunningly gorgeous floats that draw an audience from all corners of the country. Also, the shrine is famous as a gathering point on New Year's eve.
