This is said to have been opened by the Seii Taishogun ( great general who subdues the barbarians ) Sakanoue-no-Tamuramaro in the Heian period. There are approximately 30 main buildings and these were rebuilt at the start of the Edo period (1603-1868) by the third Edo shogun Ie mitsu T okugawa. The b est known is the Kiyomizu-no-butai, or stage Kiyomizu. The view from here is wonderful, especially in spring and autumn. Below the stage stand the Otowa-no-taki waterfall and Koyasu-no-to pagoda. This temple was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1994. Toilet on west side of main hall of Kiyomize-dera

This was opened for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's wife Kitanomandokoro (later called Kodaiin) to pray for the repose of Hideyoshi's soul. It is home to many important culture assets, such as the tea arbors Kasatei, Shiguretei and Kangetsudai and Kitanomandokoro's mausoleum, which still includes altar steps and miniature case shrine decorated with the beautiful "Kodai-ji makie" gold lacquer.
