Nishiki Market

This market has long been known as "Kyoto's kitchen". Each individual shop specializes in certain commodities, such as fish, pickles, tofu, mackerel sushi or Kyoto vegetables. Nearly all purchases are made with the help of the shopkeeper, who takes time to attend to individual customer needs, which makes for more enjoyable shopping. Shop displays are positioned low down, which makes for easy viewing for wheelchair users. The market passageway is level (no steps/ramped steps) so wheelchair and buggy users can browse the market comfortably. But note that some small north-south roads used by cars have to be crossed when moving through the market.

This street is lined with stores on both sides. Just walking along here can be more than enough fun. Both Shinkyogoku-dori and Teramachi-dori (shopping malls) are traffic-free pedestrian zones (bicycles also are regulated), but there are lots of people moving about, so take care. Honno-ji Temple

This is the head temple of the Honmon school of the Hokke sect, and is famous as the temple where Nobunaga Oda was attacked by Mitsuhide Akechi and his troops, forcing Nobunaga to commit suicide. Back then, the temple was located further west on Shijo-Nishi-Toin, but it was burnt down in Mitsuhide's attack. Reconstruction on the original site did start, but Hideyoshi Toyotomi (a leader loyal to Nobunaga) decreed that it be reconstructed on its present site. In the grounds, there is a tower commemorating Nobunaga, his loyal servant Ranmaru Mori and others. On the first Saturday and Sunday of every June, a Nobunaga festival is held at the temple. As the temple is associated with fire damage, the right side of the Chinese character of "no" has been altered in the temple version to give it a nuance of driving fire away. The temple grounds are paved with flagstones, and there is a slope up to the museum part of the temple as well as Textured paving blocks , so access is good at this temple.
